Set a Timer Tuesday – Garage

Garage Clutter

Does your garage look like the image above? Or is your car parked there?

Which would you rather store in your garage? An item that you spent several thousand dollars on and use pretty much every day, or a bunch of little things that are simply taking up space? Tools we know you’re not using since they’re functioning as glorified tables and not saws?

Especially in the snowy midwest, if your car is parked outside today and your garage is home to clutter, today’s the day to do something about it. Set your timer for twenty minutes and let’s get to work.

  • Call a pawn shop and find out what they’ll give you for that table saw in the photo above. Schedule an appointment for delivery if necessary and write it in your calendar.
  • Call Goodwill and schedule a pick up at their earliest available time.
  • If the items cannot leave your possession call the closest off site storage to find prices, etc. Schedule an appointment to get your things moved there.

A garage can be a big job and the middle of winter may not be exactly the right time for it. If you really are motivated to get that car in the garage, though, any time can be the right time.

Just for the record, I’m not a fan of long-term off-site storage for our belongings. However, there are times when it can be a good short-term solution to a storage issue.

10 Minute Car Clean Up

I’m gearing up for a road trip this week, so today seemed like a good day to take a look at getting the vehicle in order. This possibly tedious job doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you take the job in bite sized chunks. Before you begin grab a few bags:

Bag #1 – I use a plastic grocery bag for collecting trash.
Bag #2 – Use your choice: plastic grocery bag/reusable grocery bag/kid’s bag for collecting kid’s toys to go inside the house.
Bag #3 –  Use your choice of bag for collecting adult belongings which need to go inside.

Hang up the trash bag in a convenient location, perhaps over a head rest or a door handle for receiving trash.

  • Remove all recyclable items to the appropriate bin/container.
  • Remove all trash.
  • Remove all toys to the assigned bag.
  • Remove all magazines to the recycle bin.
  • Return maps & atlases to their appropriate location inside the vehicle.

Check out the glove box.  Are there mystery items in there? The only things we keep in our glove box are vehicle related papers (insurance card, manual, etc.) and envelopes for the ATM.

One more question: Now that the trash is gone, where is it going to go next time you go to the drive thru? In our mini-van we hang a plastic grocery bag between the two front seats and that is the trash bag. It’s not pretty, but it works. And of course it would be better to find a bio-degradable alternative, but that’s the solution for now. I like to go with what I’ve got.

If you have time, vacuum out the inside of the car while it is clean. There is nothing like driving a clean car for motivation to keep it that way.
