So a friend asked today, “What do you organize? People’s lives? Homes? Closets?” And since it’s a question I get frequently I thought I would answer it here for everyone.

Since I started my business in April of this year, I have worked on many different and interesting projects. Just a few examples:

  • Unpacking a young couple who recently relocated to the South Bend area.
  • De-cluttering and organizing an entire home, one room at a time.
  • Photo storage organization.
  • Packing with a single mom for her impending move with her son.
  • Helping an office manager catch up on back filing and improve her time management skills.
  • Working with a teenager to straighten and re-organize her “play room” while sorting items for donation.

I’ve also had the opportunity to work with the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library to present two workshops; Organizing for Families with ADD and Back to School Organizing.

Here on the blog you’ve been able to watch as I documented some of our projects around the house.

When working on any project my philosophy is always to go with what you’ve got. If we can use the space and the storage you have then great. If not, we’ll purchase only what you absolutely need. When I’m organizing it’s never about the really cool closet organizing system (although I will admit those are kind of fun). It’s about making your space and your belongings work for you.

I’ve also been considering growing the business in many different ways.

  • I’ve been thinking about creating an e-book with my “Set a Timer” updates for people who are not local to my area.
  • Offering tele-classes on Organizing 101.
  • Doing more public speaking.
  • Attempting to find fantastic organizing products and companies to share with my clients and readers.

What direction would you like to see me go? Do you have other suggestions? Do you have specific questions you would like to see covered in the Organizing 101 class, whether it was online or in person (perhaps at the library)?

Thanks so much again to everyone who has helped get the business off the ground. It’s been a very interesting year for me trying to learn both the aspect of running a small business and the aspect of working from home around my life with my family. I think we’re doing pretty well so far.
